Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala has asked of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal the seven ministries allocated for the party, including Foreign Ministry for his daughter Sujata Koirala who is also the party's international relations department chief.
Koirala urged Nepal to finalise the portfolio distribution by Wednesday stating that it had been unduly delayed, according to NC General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi. Nidhi said the Congress President told the prime minister that Sujata would step in as foreign minister.
“Whether others join or not, she's definitely joining,” a UML standing committee member participating in Tuesday's high level two-party talks quoted Koirala as saying at the Congress president's private residence in Maharajgunj.
In the 45-minute long meeting, senior UML and NC leaders discussed portfolio division. UML leader Raghuji Pant said there are no differences between the NC and UML. “We need to hold dialogues with Madhesi Janadhikar Forum and Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party,” he said.
Earlier Tuesday, UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, UML leader K.P. Oli and General Secretary Ishwor Pokhrel had advised Nepal not to give up influential ministries such as Finance, Home and Communications. “Our stance on these three mi-nistries still holds,” said Pant. “UML leaders however said if Nepali Congress wants the Defence Ministry, the UML is open about it.” Even on Tue-sday, the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) prepared by the four-party taskforce could not get the final seal after the meeting decided to give time for smaller parties to further study the CMP.
